• FHHS Baseball won their league for the 12 time in 13 years, 7 straight titles and qualified for the state playoffs. (FHHS coach Rich Warin shakes hands with the Bellevue Christian coach after the Wolverines' win last spring. (Photo courtesy: San Juan Update)
• For the second year in a row the AP studio Art students received a qualifying score of 3 or better on their exams.
• In May, at the Math Olympiad competition in Bellingham, the 6th grade team including Yasmin Sarah and Beatrice Graumann-Boss took medals in both the long problem and individual math strand. Rio Black, Henry Arnold, and Midi Thomas comprised the bulk of the the fifth grade team that took medals in both the long problem and the short problems.
• Lili Light (left) walked 50 miles last year on the Walkers Club circuit at the Elementary School and received an award at the assembly last spring.
• Thanks to the generous support of the San Juan Island Public Schools Foundation, a few years ago the Middle School was able to purchase an updated version of their mathematics textbook for grades 6-8, a classroom set of graphing calculators, and several supplemental teaching materials. Additionally, last school year, new Algebra 1 textbooks and teaching materials were purchased with the Foundation’s support. Using those materials, and combined with the hard work of every math student in the middle school, the results are amazing!
• 77.4 % of seventh graders met or exceeded standard on the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) test and exceeded the state average by 20%
• 75.4% of eighth graders met or exceeded standard on the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) test and exceeded the state average by 25%
• All Algebra 1 students taking algebra as eighth graders, yes ALL, met or exceeded standard on the new Algebra End-of-Course exam! Also from the Middle School… 85.5% of seventh graders met or exceeded standard on the two writing assessments on the MSP.
• In general, the state standardized test score results, including the Measure of Student Progress (MSP) and the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) as well as the state’s math End of Course Exams (EOC) reflect high local scores, well above the state average in reading, writing and math.
• Approximately 5% of our English Language Learner (ELL) students exited out of the English as a Second Language program last year district wide.

• Friday Harbor High School has been ranked in the top 12 schools for Advanced Placement exam student performance by CollegeBoard. 59% of the graduating class scored a 3 or higher on at least one exam at any point during high school and 53% of ALL (not just seniors) Friday Harbor High School students who took AP exams last years earned a 3 or higher.
• In the spring of 2011, the State of Washington awarded Friday Harbor High School the Achievement Award for Overall Excellence with a special recognition in Language Arts.

• The Friday Harbor Middle School Quest Class took the lead in our Veteran’s Day Assembly (above) and spring clean ups. These twelve and thirteen year old students have been immersed in their community and have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of artists, a cartographer, boom operator, and the staff of the Whale Museum and the Washington State Ferry system.
• SJPSF also promotes district-wide excellence the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines. Our activities have supported:
- New math & science textbooks and supplies, keeping our classrooms current and relevant
- Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program (UW FHLSOP), bringing exciting, inquiry-based environmental science to every grade level
- New ROV Clubs at FHHS & FHMS. The inaugural FHHS team placed third among twelve teams (scroll down to see the story!) in the Pacific NW regional in spring 2011.

FHHS's team was Orca Bowl champs again! Left to right: Nikki LeBaron, Elle Guard, Audrey Olshefsky, Nick Roberts, and Gavin Guard. The team's coach was Nick Frazee (pictured) and the assistant coach was Marc Vermeire, both Friday Harbor HS teachers.
