SJPS Foundation receives $25,000 STEM Grant

The San Juan Public Schools Foundation has received a substantial grant for equipment, curriculum and professional development for the new STEM Building at FHHS. The grant comes from The Honeywell Charitable Fund of The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region in Virginia. Dave and Nancy Honeywell, directors of the Fund and residents of San Juan Island, came from the Fredericksburg area of Virginia. SJPSF Treasurer Jim Skoog and past President Nancy Young wrote the grant for consideration by the Honeywells and their Community Foundation. Last month’s Phone-A-Thon – and you! – raised $90,000 … here’s more: Dear Community Members, The San Juan Public Schools Foundation acknowledges with gratitude the outpouring of support from local individuals and businesses during our annual Phone-A-Thon in October. Pledges from individuals and businesses through our Business Partnership program totaled over $90,000 for the 2015-2016 school year. All money earned goes directly to our public schools to purchase items that state funds do not cover, including art and music supplies, items for STEM courses, and other educational materials for children in all grades K-12. Thank you from the First Graders!

The first graders in Mrs. Sandwith’s class enjoyed writing for the first time in their Weekend Journals that was donated by the Foundation. Their job was to write at least three sentences about the weekend and then to illustrate. It will be a learning experience at the end of the year when the children have the opportunity to go back and see how much they have improved. Thank you!

Graphing Calculators put to use in Friday Harbor High School

A “Thank You” follows from Beth Spaulding at Friday Harbor High School: The set of ten graphing calculators you purchased for the students in my classes are used on a daily basis. I have included two pictures of students using the calculators in Algebra 2. Thank you very much for providing this technology for the students. FHMS ROV Team strikes gold again!

FHMS ROV Team strikes gold again! They took first place, for the second year in a row, in the Scout class at the MATE Pacific Northwest Regionals. Their winning entry was designed to accomplish a two-part mission: 1) Science under the ice and 2) Subsea pipeline inspection and repair. The FHHS team also competed strongly in the Ranger class and placed fourth. BuzzMath provides Students with new ways of approaching Math

Debbie Taylor, 6th Grade Math at FHES, compiled a number of Thank-You letters from her students for the Foundation’s support of a new subscription to BuzzMath for the 2015-16 academic year. BuzzMath is an online educational site teaching middle school Common Core mathematical skills through an engaging and rigorous platform, involving interactive applications with immediate feedback to the students, and also allowing the teachers to follow student progress through detailed reports informing differentiated instruction for all levels.
